Steps For Creating A Picture Frame Display
There are lots of tips on how to install hanging hardware on your frame because that is what people always focus on when hanging their frames. However, aesthetic considerations regarding where and in what formation to hang pictures in an interior are just as important an undertaking.
There is no set rules when arranging your picture frames because personal preference is really what dictates how you arrange your picture wall. With that being said, there are some guidelines you can use when it comes to arranging picture frame displays.
Pictures always look better when they’re hung in a group instead of spaced out in a random arrangement over a large area. Unless a picture is rather large, it is usually best not to hang it alone on a wall because it could look lost. The exception to the rule is when you have a very large photograph or piece of artwork in at least an 11×14 picture frame that can handle being displayed by itself.
Be Practical
You can display a picture frame on any flat surface but it should be practical where it won’t get knocked off or damaged like in a narrow hallway. You may suffer breakage from a fallen frame or you’ll just go crazy constantly straightening them.
Watch out for hanging pictures near areas of extreme temperatures like an air conditioner or heater vent. The rising heat and the dust and grease that are carried upward can damage your pictures and can crack the glue of the picture frames.
You should also avoid hanging your pictures in direct sunlight or opposite a window because they will definitely fade. Watercolors fade easily, so they are particularly vulnerable to damage from sunlight. Hanging picture frames with glazing (glass) hung opposite a window can be hard to see due to reflection from the window.
Picking the Right Wall
Use furniture as a guide to determine the outer (vertical) boundaries of your grouping. Imagine a rectangle “drawn” on the wall up from the outer edges of the piece of furniture, be it a side board, chest of drawers, or a sofa. This principle works as well for the space above a bed or other furniture pieces.
White or plain, light-colored walls look best with strong colors and pictures displayed in simple picture frames without mats. Photographs and monochrome prints also look nice displayed on light colored walls.
For colored walls, it’s usually best to mimic the color scheme of the room in some way, like in the color of the picture mat – or you can use the mat as an effective contrast to your color scheme. For walls that are dark, it’s usually best to use light colored mats in your metal picture frames.
Different considerations need to be taken when hanging pictures on patterned walls so as to avoid the appearance that the wall and the picture are fighting for attention. The picture frame that will look the best will be heavily dependent upon the color, size and style of your wall. A mat is essential to clearly define the picture.
